WoodWing Enterprise 7.6 helps publishing to the new iPad and further enhances DPS

WoodWinglogo1 WoodWing Enterprise 7.6 helps publishing to the new iPad and further enhances DPSWoodWing has enhanced the Digital Publishing capabilities of its multi-channel publishing system Enterprise with the launch of version 7.6, helping publishers take full advantage of the high resolution of the new iPad. Both for print and digital publishing, Enterprise 7.6 also includes a number of new features for its multi-channel editor. WoodWing has continued to further optimize usability and strengthen both performance and efficiency of the Enterprise system. This update enables publishers to publish their media-rich content even more efficiently to print, Web, social media, smartphones and tablets.

woodwing enterprise 76 thumb WoodWing Enterprise 7.6 helps publishing to the new iPad and further enhances DPS

Enterprise 7.6 improvements for Adobe DPS and the new iPad

With version 7.6 of Enterprise, WoodWing has extended the support of the .folio format used by the Adobe DPS. Enterprise now enables designers to import and merge .folio files, making it easy to re-use existing material or to handle digital advertisements.

WoodWing´s renowned Artboard feature, enabling publishers to effortlessly create content for multiple display sizes and aspect ratios, is now also available for the creation of .folio files. This is a great time-saver for publishers that wish to publish on the new Apple iPad with its double-resolution Retina display. The option to export background images as a .pdf instead of a .jpg is another helpful feature for the new iPad, resulting in a much smaller file size, optimizing the download experience.

The new Digital Publishing features also include new and enhanced options to publish and manage content from Enterprise to the Adobe Distribution Service.

Content Station 7.6 offers improved support for tables and spread.

The multi-channel editor included in version 7.6 of WoodWing´s content management application Content Station now offers enhanced handling of tables. Designers can easily edit tables similar to a spreadsheet application and can copy-and-paste even complex tables within a document. Support for previewing facing pages directly within the multi-channel editor is another new feature.

The new version also offers an updated audio and video player. In addition, WoodWing implemented many user-interface enhancements based on customer feedback. Collaboration within the editorial and design teams will benefit from the new Inline Notes feature.

“Publishing their content to print and online platforms as well as to tablets is already part of the daily business of a growing number of magazine, newspapers and corporate publishers worldwide,” said Erik Schut, President of WoodWing Software. “Now it’s important to continue to improve the efficiency of multi-channel publishing, in order to bring the resources required to a minimum.”

Australian and New Zealand publishers are now ready to take advantage of multi channel output

At Creative Folks we have now successfully implemented Enterprise 7.6 and assisted customers in building their apps to work on both iPad 1/2 and the new retina display iPad as well as Android tablets together inside the same creative workflow. There are major advantages and efficiencies to be gained from this significant release and no easier way to publish regular issues of magazines and newspapers to so many different tablet varieties.

With the sales data from Q4 in 2011 now published and what we are seeing again in Q1 2012, the dominance of Apple in terms of market share is waning with recent data presented at the WoodWing Xperience stating 42.4% of worldwide tablet devices NOT being iOS with Android the dominant 39.1% share and that most of these gains were made in the last 3-6 months now that the technology has provided a variety of sizes and price points to meet a wider audience.

If you wish to know more about multi channel publishing including web sites and social media in addition to tablets, please contact us at sales@folks.com.au or call the office.

Day 1 of the WoodWing Xperience in Amsterdam – a summary

Having arived in Amsterdam on Sunday morning, I attended the Partner Day on Monday and the WoodWing Xperience then kicked off in full swing on Tuesday here at the Hotel Kransnapolski in Amsterdam, with over 300 atendees from all over the globe.

After a comical introduction by our MC Russell Viers, first up was the keynote from Hans Janssen and Erik Schut detailing the industry trends and roadmap from WoodWing, which seems quite agressive with Version 8 of Enterprise due to ship and Q2 2012 and a 8.x upgrade planned for each Quarter thereafter. A lot of focus on enhanced workflow efficiences as well as greater integration with DAM and archive systems are coming, as well as collaborative annotations and  further enhancements to interfaces for web sites. The expansion of ther Multi Channel Editor and Planning tool are some of the features to name on the roadmap, with more specific detail to be supplied in a later post.

As part of this session, the announcement was made of the of a new product SmartDPS Tools. This are a set of InDesign plug-in’s providing Digital Magazine features of Hotspots and scrollable areas to the regular Adobe DPS tools, without the need for an Enterprise Server. What is exiting is the online Widget library for use with SmartDPS Tools, that will provide creative users access to a wide range of enhanced functionality, which I’m told will continue to be expanded over time. The ability to output .folio files using SmartDPS Tools will allow the development of interactive advertising by many small creative seems with the ability to export and share their creative advertising via .folio files with bigger publishers who might be using WoodWing Enterprise to produce their Digital Magazines. Alternativly, it provides regular Adobe DPS users a greater and simpler range of tools to utilise in their publications.

Yes iPhone and Smartphone support for DPS is around the corner in May with Sprint 20 release as well as a range of feature gaps that really finalise the WoodWing transition and add many more feature that WoodWing reader did not previously provide.

Mitch Klaif of Time Inc then presented the keynote ‘ We’re on it’ and described how they manage to produce the complete portfolio of magazines to all tablet technologies on the market, a no mean feat. Codenamed ‘Access All Areas’ it was as you can imagine a huge effort by all and a number of pit falls to avoid were discussed.

Two interesting findings:

- 68% of Time Inc subscribers owning an iPad wish to receive both digital and print editions of their magazines

- 40% higher satisfaction levels with magazines designed for tablets over generated straight from print as PDF

Also the new research presented really defined that subscription integration was a must have offering with 81% of Time Inc Subscribers, who own an iPad would be more likely to renew if they received digital access as part of their subscription.

All Access 300x224 Day 1 of the WoodWing Xperience in Amsterdam a summaryMitch concluded that there All Access decision is driving strong cross platform loyalty with authentication increasing by up to 32% per month. This statement Reach, Relevence brough results for Advertisers. Mitch concluded that sucess was not a straight line and was best represented visually.

Joe Zeff then presented his design philosophy and showcased a number of apps and special issues they have created for a number of publishers. The use of a number of approaches and tools in order to make the apps reach their audience and compel the reader.

Other statistics presented indicated that tablet diversification is on the rise with many new quality Android based tablets from key vendors getting traction in the market place and Windows 8 is about to start shipping adding more platforms.Global Trends 300x225 Day 1 of the WoodWing Xperience in Amsterdam a summary

After the networking lunch Simon Regan-Edwards of Sunday Times explained how they grew their renowned tablet app from 31,000 downloads per issue in July 2011 to 64,000 in January 2012.

Rebecca McPheters of McPheters & Company gave a deep insight of the results of the company´s iMonitor rankings evaluating more than 5,000 apps from 65 countries.

Betty Wong, Editor in Chief of Fitness published by the US publishing house Meredith

- Provide tablet users with the comforting familarity of print, but add interactive enhancements

- Keep up with emerging platforms without driving editorial staff crazy (and Betty thinks that this is possible with WoodWing´s solutions)

Stefan Ragaz of the Swiss daily newspaper Neue Luzerner Zeitung explained how the paper successfully implemented WoodWing Enterprise and Content Station to create the six daily regional issues and several supplements.

The afternoon tracks provided many interesting technology and product seminars, which  unfortunately I could not attend all of them. However, the highlights were DPS Entitlement integration for subscriptions within apps and a session on DPS migration planning and techniques for getting existing customer apps across to DPS.

I’ll be posting more over the next few days so stay tuned.

AdNews on the iPad

AdNews, Australia’s leading publication serving the advertising, marketing and media industries, has released its first issue on the iPad using WoodWing’s Enterprise Content Publishing Platform and The Saints PDF to Tablet conversion system.

AdNews Icon AdNews on the iPadFounded in 1928, AdNews is published fortnightly and its iPad launch further compliments the brand’s website, mobile skin and daily email newsletter.

Yaffa Publishing already has a strong bond with WoodWing and is currently producing over thirty-five titles with a sophisticated WoodWing workflow. After viewing numerous solutions from different vendors, Yaffa Publishing decided to extend the functionality of their existing system by incorporating WoodWing’s Digital Magazine Tools.

Yaffa Publishing Production Director Matthew Gunn said the move to iPad had long been deliberated and they were just waiting for some more impact in the market from the launch of iPad 2 before taking the plunge.Adnews AdNews on the iPad

“We always intended to pursue the iPad option, but like most publishers, we wanted to wait and see what the market was like before dipping our toe into the water,” he said.

“But now that we have launched AdNews, I can see it as the catalyst for further launches,” he added, referring to the 35-plus publications within the Yaffa stable.

After weighing up the options of the fully interactive application as compared to a PDF replica version, the Yaffa management team decided the replica best represented the AdNews brand, whilst allowing the reader to enjoy interaction through bonus content.

AdNews is a news based title and, as has been highlighted in recent Apps launched by leading Australian Newspapers, the replica version is the preferred option,” added Gunn. “However, premium content will soon be made available to iPad users via AdNewsTV.”

Industry leading solutions provider, Creative Folks Pty Ltd, assisted with the project.

“This was not simply about creating a readable PDF for the iPad,” said Andrew Lomas, Project Sales Director for Creative Folks. “Yaffa wanted to add interactivity not generally available in standard replicas and offer the iPad version free to their existing print subscriber base. This meant a little bit of work was required in the back end, but the result speaks for itself.”

AdNews is one of the oldest news titles of its kind in Australia,” added Matthew Green, Managing Director of Creative Folks. “Helping the team at Yaffa to bring such a prestigious publication to the iPad has been a privilege.”

So what’s next for Yaffa Publishing’s vast array of specialist consumer and B2B titles?

“We are very interested in WoodWing’s integration with Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite,” said Matthew Gunn. “It seems to be an ideal solution to bring more of our titles to market.”

About Yaffa:

YAFFA LOGO AdNews on the iPadYaffa Publishing Group was founded in 1925 with the publication of Newspaper News, the forerunner to AdNews, Australia’s leading advertising, media and marketing magazine.

The company has expanded significantly since then but remains an independent, Australian-owned operation. Yaffa publishes over 35 consumer and business-to-business magazines and is the country’s leading marine publisher with titles such as Cruising Helmsman, Australian Sailing and Australian Yachting.

It is also Australia’s premier photography magazine publisher with titles including Australian Photography, Capture and Digital Photography & Design.

Yaffa publishes the oldest and best-selling fishing magazine in the country; Fishing World, as well as Nature & Health, Great Walks and Australian Flying.

Its business-to-business division incorporates over 15 titles spanning industries such as fashion, advertising, healthcare, food service and packaging.

Enterprise 7.5.1 supports DPS Sprint 18 Features

Submitted by Victor Cardoso on 26 January 2012

WoodWinglogo1 Enterprise 7.5.1 supports DPS Sprint 18 FeaturesSince the announcement of the Digital Publishing Alliance between WoodWing and Adobe in October last year, WoodWing engineers have been working closely together with the DPS development team at Adobe to create the best possible digital publishing solution.

Some days ago, Adobe released Sprint 18 of its DPS solution, while WoodWing made available version 7.5.1 of its multi-channel publishing system Enterprise. This marked another significant step forward on the path to sync the features of WoodWing´s Digital Publishing Tools and the Adobe Content Viewer. This latest release now enables WoodWing customers to create new editions of their digital publications that contain almost all the exciting features previously offered by WoodWing´s own readers.

Particularly noteworthy are the options for nested interactivity Adobe´s Content Viewer is now able to display. Designers can combine hotspots with web, audio and video elements as well as slideshows, dossier links, and even widgets. Widgets are HTML5 objects enabling an even higher degree of interactivity; they can be easily integrated in the page layouts of tablet publications. In addition, hotspots can be created in scrollable areas and, vice versa, scrollable areas can be defined in hotspots. Even hotspots on hotspots are possible.

All these features are essential to create an exciting reading experience and to easily structure even comprehensive content in a clear and reader-friendly manner.

Victor Cardoso leads international technology demonstrations and educational sessions for WoodWing Software, promoting the company’s innovative approach to cross-media publishing. He has a broad experience bringing together the needs of individuals and the goals of organizations when implementing automated workflow methods for the new media world.

My Take: the WoodWing and Adobe Alliance

Guest Author: Fraser Crozier – Head of Publishing Technologies for Pacific Magazines.

WWGlossyLogo My Take: the WoodWing and Adobe AllianceIn the early days (less than three years ago for WoodWing), the company was always at pains to point out it developed software and maintained an arms-length approach with customers via its network of integration partners. This stance, company representatives maintained, allowed the company to concentrate on what it does best—to develop cutting edge software solutions for media companies.

Along came the iPad, and as opposed to business as usual, WoodWing approached some of its key customers and became partners overnight, directly interfacing with senior management, developers, designers, editors, and publishers. As the wave of iPad mania took hold, the requirement to service the burgeoning growth of digital magazines (digimags) on tablets grew, and WoodWing needed to rapidly expand its footprint in the service side of the business. Although the company still maintained its arms-length approach to the clients on the ground (not including the biggest launch partners such as Time Inc.), the company entered a phase where it was offering, and trying to provide, a 24/7/365 service for content delivery.

The rest is really history. The number of digimag apps escalated dramatically as publishers fought to gain traction in this space, and consequently we saw a veritable explosion of content in the form of digimag issues, all of which required significant storage space on a CDN via the CDS. Publishers were scaling out and were feeling the ever increasing pressure to add more and more features to the reader apps to keep it fresh. Clients and consumers of the tablet devices fill a very demanding demographic, so it was not unrealistic to expect cutting edge features to keep pace with the evolution of iOS on the iPad and in some of the Androids.

Now comes the real impact for WoodWing. The traditional channel for WoodWing has been print. It has done a reasonably good job at staying current with versions of Adobe InDesign and InCopy. At about the time the company launched the idea of using Adobe AIR and Flex as a means of delivering a cross-platform client tool (Content Station), the idea of using one content source for multiple output channels emerged as well.

WoodWing invested a considerable amount of time bringing the publishing workflow into the 21st century. The company faced a number of file format challenges from an Adobe point of view, especially with article formats changing between different versions of InCopy. Of course, the [lack of] maturity of the Adobe AIR technology caused various stability and user experience headaches along the way.

So we end up here today, witnessing the recent alliance of Adobe’s DPS and WoodWing’s Enterprise workflow. We see the imminent demise of the WoodWing Reader App and of CDN and CDS, but we also see some light at the end of the tunnel. Several WoodWing clients will face some uphill challenges in the migration from the WoodWing Reader Apps and the CDN and CDS.

However, the alliance is clearly a strong strategic move on WoodWing’s part. Namely, the company effectively outsources two of the biggest headaches it will likely encounter. Chasing the app-tail has in general not been very much fun for the company and a rather complex and pitfall riddled ride for clients. Unlike much larger, slower moving companies, WoodWing was agile enough to move quickly with the trends, but at what price?

Speed to market puts a lot of pressure on the biggest of players, and even with the best of discipline and good intentions bugs get through the cracks. WoodWing is no exception, and I could clearly see efforts to scale upwards and outwards was causing headaches from a development point of view. The rule of thumb is throwing more resources at a problem never works; it just plain takes time to get it right. This is not to say WoodWing was not miles in front of the nearest opposition, and herein lies the attractiveness of WoodWing to Adobe. The company was out there, doing it, and not looking back.

The end result of this outsourcing of the Reader App, CND and CDS is a refocusing on the core products that help pay the maintenance costs of hundreds of print-based seats, who, of course, are all interested in transitioning to multi-channel publishing, but felt the core product was left on the bench. This situation will definitely change, but not before WoodWing gets the Reader App, CDN and CDS monkey off its back. This transition will take quite some time to occur as there are approximately 16,500 legacy WoodWing Reader App issues to migrate over to the new Adobe DPS Reader App.

Understandably, there are a number of critical functional gaps between the Adobe Reader App and the WoodWing Reader App. The good news is Adobe has invested heavily in DPS and is about to escalate that investment to meet the demands about to be placed on the products and services now that the company has just effectively inherited 450+ unique apps from WoodWing. We have been assured by Zeke Koch, Director of Product Management, Digital Publishing, at Adobe the company is placing a very high priority on getting this right from the outset and taking care of business.

WoodWing is compensating its channel partners so the partners are financially and technically supported in migrating clients apps across. This compensation is, I am sure, co-funded somewhere by Adobe in this whole deal.

All in all, the benefits for WoodWing clients are obvious. Adobe will continue to increase investment in this space and has a huge footprint worldwide as compared to WoodWing. There is also the basic-to-intermediate level of Omniture analytics integrated out of box, which is also a big plus for clients who have previously needed to customize analytics integration. It is worth noting the alliance is also a big win for Adobe’s own DPS customers because now there will be a whole bag full of features accommodated that have previously been talked about, but no clear schedule had been forthcoming from Adobe.

On the cost front, WoodWing has always had a much more competitive advantage as opposed to Adobe’s pricing models. For some clients, the difference in the price model is marginal, but several clients will see a price differential of 800% and more. Not a good outlook for these clients, so there are definitely some gaps needing to be filled there by WoodWing and Adobe. There is anecdotal evidence there might be preferential pricing models for WoodWing customers, which I am certain will become a strong talking point by non-WoodWing customers. Democratization of the publishing platform may not extend to the pricing models.

In conclusion, the alliance is something I have suspected since IFRA 2010, yet there really was not any visible movement on it until the last three to four weeks. The alliance makes complete sense considering WoodWing is the longest standing InDesign/InCopy plug-in developer. Also, considering Content Station is based heavily on Adobe’s Flex and AIR technologies, it would not be surprising to find out one day there is more than an alliance regarding DPS. After all, Adobe DPS has always been a great idea in desperate need for a workflow.

Pacific Magazines were the first company to implement WoodWing in Australia, beginning with Who Weekly in 2007. Fraser Crozier has been at the forefront of the technology ever since, backed up by the team at Creative Folks.
